Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that is caused by the breakdown of other elements, primarily Uranium, Thorium, and Radium. These radioactive metals break down in the ground and releases an inert gas. Radon gas is both colorless and odorless, making it even more dangerous.
Everyone is exposed to radon gas in trace amounts one way or another. In an outdoor setting, the gas is able to disperse and dilute itself. Because of this, radon released outside is usually not a problem.
Radon inside enclosed spaces (homes, schools, and workplaces ) will remain for long periods of time, and as a result, is inhaled. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer. The CDC believes that one in every 15 homes has high radon levels. (https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/lung/basic_info/risk_factors.htm)
Radon gas enters your home through gaps and cracks in the foundation. If the levels in your home are high enough, mitigation should be considered.
Mitigation usually consists of sealing any "living space" in your home and installing a fan to dispel the radon gas outside of your home.
